Chora, as the locals call the capital of the Island of Kythira, is located on the south side of the island above the bay of Kapsali. The formal name of the town is Kythira. It’s less confusing to call the town “Chora,” I suppose.

This lovely town is full of Venetian mansions, townhouses, and small houses built close to one another. Many of the buildings are painted bright white with blue wooden doors and window frames. Now and then you will find a wooden door or the unusual orange door featured in the photos below.

We spent the late afternoon walking through the pristine town filled with shops and cafes. Being the month of September and siesta time for the locals, the streets were mostly empty, just the way we like it. Please enjoy a peek at a few of the many interesting doors in Chora.

P.S. Kythira Island is often spelled as Kythera. So, if you are interested in searching for information about this island, it’s a good idea to try both versions of spelling.
