Have you ever noticed the signature colors of your local area or other places you’ve seen around the world? For much of my life, I went about my daily routine rather blind to the colors and details of my surroundings. It only seemed when I traveled someplace new that I noticed the vibrancy and character of a city or rural landscape.
Then, several years ago, I developed an interest in photography. I found, with a camera in hand, my eyes began to notice the rich, intricate details of my surroundings. I discovered a new appreciation of familiar places and a deeper awareness when visiting new ones.
When I visit New England, the place I grew up, my eye is caught by the reds of barns, old mill factories, covered bridges, colonial homes, and brick-sided buildings.
In Northern California, where I live now, my eye is drawn to the vibrant Spanish-influenced colors liberally used in seaside villages, boutique shopping centers, and local town centers.
And, in Greece, where we go every year for vacation, I’ve fallen in love with my favorite color palette, Aegean Sea blues.

I love this post. It’s careful and meaningful and observational. This is so true, every place has its colour, and light too. I can usually tell by the colours if a photo was taken in my city of origin, Ljubljana in Slovenia, even before I identify the location. I’m just back and was suffering there a bit for lack of sun. That’s why I was on the lookout for colour so much more. In winter, this is usually white and not much other.
I will never forget the blues of Greece, even though now in Tuscany almost by the sea I can see similar blues. Here the colours are blue of the sky and green of the pine trees and all sorts of earth tones for houses. But you know them from my blog. 🙂
Nice of you to say. I’m so glad you enjoyed this post. For those who are drawn to the colors of places, it shows prominently in their photos. I can easily visualize the colors of Ljubljana and Tuscany from your lovely images. It’s so true about the light of a place. Greece has the brightest light of any place I’ve been. California’s a bright spot on the planet as well, except for this year, where we’ve had lots of haze from the various fires.
