Upscale yet down to earth, Monemvasia offers visitors old world charm with the convenience of modern amenities. Step through the front and only entrance to the medieval fortress and find cobbled lanes, old stone buildings, and breathtaking views of the Myrtoan Sea. It’s easy to get lost in the maze of narrow paths carved into the side of this giant rock joined to Peloponnese by a restored causeway.
On our last visit to Monemvasia, we spent time roaming the lower pathways in the village. I focused on finding interesting doors and architecture, my husband on learning more about the history of the fortress. Each of us lost in our pursuits; we headed in opposite directions finding ourselves alone in the maze of empty passages. Retracing our steps, we eventually found each other in an open courtyard at the center of the fortress.
Here’s a look at some of the lovely, old world doors I found along the way.
